Humans, Not Cogs: The ROI of Viewing Your Employees As Humans, Not Workers

Vacations. Holidays. Wellness stipends and events. Mental Health Days. Too often these are viewed as “extras” included at the bottom of offer letters or at the end of Employee Handbooks. But have you considered the ROI of these benefits as it relates to the efficiency, productivity, and overall health of your organization? Using real-life case studies, as well as personal experience, this session will make the argument that viewing your employees as humans (and all that comes with being a human in the 21st century!) rather than workers can lead to a more efficient, productive, and happy workplace.

Learning Objectives:

  • Using real-life case studies, the participant will learn the value of investing in their employees.
  • Participants will learn the data that shows how investing in employees leads to a more efficient, productive, and healthy workplace.
  • Learn how to implement some minor (and some potentially major) changes in your organization.

Public media has faced numerous challenges over the last decade. As we look towards the next decade, let’s explore the largest collection of station fundraising data to help us define the next decade in fundraising. In this session, stations gain insight into latest trends and factors that impact our collective fundraising, new channels of acquisition, payment methods, and even behaviors of donors as it relates to our content. We will highlight stations that lead the country in their fundraising practices. Collectively, we will learn from efforts and translate them into action that any station can utilize in their market. This session will draw on data from over 175 stations (CDP’s National Reference File), Passport viewership trends, donor capacity, and demographic indicators. It will also dive into trends observed at other non-profits.

Recruitment Strategies and how Community Engagement = Better Outcomes

If public media serves our consumers, it makes sense to partner with our communities to listen and include their voices on what they want and need. Therefore, a successful recruitment strategy can involve community engagement. When it comes time for finding new staff members, why not partner with local communities? Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how we partnered with community groups to inform the position development and recruitment of the Associate Director of Community Engagement at PBS Wisconsin.
  • Discuss other strategies fellow public media stations practice that may result in successful recruitments that increase applicant diversity metrics in gender, race, and disability statuses.
  • Create an actionable list of strategies your public media station could deploy for successful recruitments that reflect the communities you serve.

Building a Culture of Digital Testing

Testing can be a challenge for any organization—it can challenge an employee’s views or knowledge—making them question their beliefs. In addition, testing can be time consuming and resource intensive—not to mention difficult to prioritize. Considering this situation how do you build a culture of digital testing? In this session, we will discuss both how to conduct testing and how to generate buy-in from your team using data, positioning, and team empowerment. Pulling from our own MSB testing experience, across donation forms, websites and email, we will demonstrate the true value of testing—beyond just the revenue (although certainly including that). By session conclusion, there should be no doubt that testing is vital to your future and life changing for your employees.

Learning Objectives:

  • A better understanding of the basic testing everyone should be doing, no matter their station size.
  • Results, including revenue, gathered in past testing, as well as the tools and approaches utilized to execute the test.

Throwing Spaghetti at the Wall: Learning, Development, and Work/Life Balance

We all know that station work can’t be accomplished without human resources, but what about developing and nurturing talent as a way to invest in employee growth, which in turn has the potential to improve workplace productivity, creativity and retention?  Research shows that employers who invest in staff development help their employees hone strengths and grow skills, which better equips them to handle their roles, yet learning and professional development is often the first program to be hit by budget cuts.  Learn about different pay LMS platforms used to create a learning rich environment to ensure station staff have opportunities to develop through multiple pathways.  Or, design your own learning track in areas like:  Managerial/Leadership Training; Technical Learning and Role Advancement.  Finally, we’ll explore job-embedded training, job shadowing, and training with other partners, as well as walk through how to create actionable steps to cultivate employees in order to achievement movement and momentum.  The session will close out with a quick reminder about self-care actually helps employees thrive and grow.

Learning Objectives:

  • The importance of employee development and cultivating from within.
  • Creating a learning pathway that fits your station’s needs (and budget!).
  • Balancing work with self-care and why it’s important for all levels.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in a Polarized and Politicized Context

This conversation will focus on how the mission of public media can provide a guidepost for navigating DEI in the polarized and politicized environment that is challenging today’s leaders. This session will include concepts around “binary thinking” among stakeholders and how it develops, the declining objectivity of traditional media and unintended consequences of social media’s business model, the importance of building a culture that is inclusive of all diversity dimensions (identity and cognitive), how diversity blind spots can lead to suboptimal performance, and how focusing on mission can facilitate leveraging all of the organization’s diversity in support of a common purpose. Audience engagement will also serve to direct and further the conversation.
